From Dignity to Perseverance: Helping Kids Believe in Themselves

September is coming to an end, and somehow October is already knocking on the door! 🍂

Around Tumble Shine, each new month means new skills, new goals, new events—and a new Word of the Month.

Throughout September, our athletes have been learning about Dignity.

Dignity means understanding that every person has value and worth simply because they are human. We've talked with our athletes about treating others in a way that helps them feel safe, seen and valued—but we've also encouraged them to recognize that same value in themselves.

As we head into October, we're building on that lesson with our next Word of the Month:

PERSEVERANCE 💙

And we think these two words belong together more than you might realize.

“I Can't Do It!”

If you have a child in tumbling, you've probably heard this one before. 😂

Maybe they're working on a cartwheel. Maybe it's a back walkover they've been chasing for months. Maybe they're learning something completely unrelated to tumbling—reading a difficult book, solving a math problem, learning to ride a bike or trying something new at school. They try. It doesn't work. They try again. Still nothing. And eventually…

“I CAN'T DO IT!”

Those moments can be frustrating for kids, but they're also some of the most valuable moments we get as coaches.

Because that's when we get to remind them:

Not being able to do something YET doesn't mean you aren't capable of doing it.

Dignity Says, “I Still Have Value.”

One of the biggest things we want our athletes to understand is that their value isn't determined by what skills they can perform. You don't become more important because you got your back handspring. You don't become less important because you fell off the obstacle. You aren't a failure because another athlete learned something before you did.

You have value before you ever step onto the floor.

That's dignity.

And when kids begin to understand that mistakes don't change their worth, something pretty cool can happen:

They become a little less afraid to make them.

Perseverance Says, “I'll Try Again.”

That's where our October Word of the Month comes in.

Perseverance means continuing to try even when something is hard, frustrating or doesn't happen right away. It means learning that mistakes aren't failures. They're part of learning.

They're part of growing. And they're DEFINITELY part of tumbling. 😉

Our October Tumble Tip says it perfectly:

Big skills are built from little ones.

When something feels hard, sometimes the answer isn't to keep throwing the entire skill over and over again. Sometimes we go back to our drills. We work on our form. We strengthen one little piece. Then another. Then another. Every attempt is teaching the body something—even the ones that don't land. And eventually all those little pieces start coming together.

That's Why We Say…

Hard Work…Pays Off!

And…

We Never…Give Up!

Those aren't just fun things we yell inside the gym.

They're lessons we hope our athletes eventually carry with them outside of it.

We want our kids to know:

💙 I am valuable even when I struggle.

💙 Making a mistake doesn't make me a failure.

💙 I don't have to be perfect.

💙 I can ask for help.

💙 I can break a big goal into smaller ones.

💙 I can keep going.

Because eventually the cartwheel becomes a roundoff. The roundoff becomes a back handspring. And one day that little athlete who once said “I can't!” is helping encourage another kid who feels exactly the way they once did. That's the kind of progress we're REALLY proud of.

And October Is Going to Be FUN! 🎃

We're heading into a very busy month at Tumble Shine!

Our October newsletter has several dates you'll want on your calendar:

Friday, October 2 — Day Camp

October 5–9 — Fall Break Day Camp

Please remember that there will be NO EVENING CLASSES October 5–9. This is a pre-scheduled closure for staff training, deep cleaning and routine maintenance.

Then one of our favorite days of the entire fall arrives:

🎃 TRUNK OR TREAT — October 17 from 4:00–6:00 PM

Our annual Trunk or Treat is a FREE, family-friendly community event, and we'd love to see your family there!

Want to set up a trunk? Families who sign up to participate will receive a $20 credit toward November tuition!

And after Trunk or Treat…

🌟 GLOW PARTY — October 17 from 7:00–9:00 PM!

October is going to be packed with learning, activities and plenty of fun.

But through all of it, we're going to keep reminding our athletes of something simple:

You don't have to be perfect. You just have to keep going.

Here's to a great end to September and an AWESOME October at Tumble Shine! 🍂💙
