More Than Flips: How Tumbling Builds Confidence in Kids

3 min read

When parents begin looking for tumbling classes for kids in Berea, Kentucky, they may be hoping their child learns a cartwheel, handstand, back walkover or eventually a back handspring. And, of course, we LOVE watching those skills happen.

But some of the biggest accomplishments at Tumble Shine Athletics aren't always the ones you can photograph.

They're the moments when a child says: “I can't do this.” ...and then decides to try one more time.

They're the moments when a nervous athlete finally raises their hand to ask a coach for help.

Or when a child who has spent weeks practicing a skill suddenly realizes: “WAIT! I DID IT!”

Those are the moments that make youth sports so special.

Because tumbling isn't only teaching children how to move their bodies. It's teaching them what they're capable of.

💙 Confidence Doesn't Always Come First

We sometimes think children need to feel confident before they're willing to try something difficult. But often, confidence happens the other way around. A child tries something.

It doesn't work. They try again. They make a tiny improvement. Their coach notices. They practice some more. And eventually, something that once felt impossible starts feeling possible. That's where confidence begins.

It isn't necessarily: "I know I can do this." Sometimes it's: "I'm not sure I can do this yet...but I'm willing to try."

🤸 Big Skills Are Built From Little Ones

Our October Tumble Tip at Tumble Shine is: Big skills are built from little ones.

When something feels hard, we encourage our athletes to return to their drills, concentrate on good form and continue practicing. Every attempt helps their body learn—even the ones that don't end with a perfect landing. That's an important lesson for tumbling. It's an even better lesson for life. Kids aren't going to master everything the first time. They're going to struggle with math problems. They're going to lose games. They're going to make mistakes.

They're going to encounter things that other children seem to learn faster. And they're going to have days when they want to quit. Learning how to work through those moments is incredibly valuable.

October's Word of the Month: Perseverance

That's exactly why our October Word of the Month at Tumble Shine Athletics is Perseverance. We describe perseverance as continuing to try even when something is hard, frustrating or doesn't happen right away. We want our athletes to understand that mistakes aren't failures—they're part of learning and growing. In the gym, that might look like attempting the same cartwheel drill over and over. But children are also practicing how to:

⭐ Handle frustration⭐ Listen to corrections⭐ Set goals⭐ Celebrate small improvements⭐ Ask for help⭐ Try again after making a mistake⭐ Be proud of effort—not just results. Those lessons don't stay inside the gym.

⭐ “I Can't” Becomes “I Can't YET”

One of the most powerful little words we can give a child is: YET.

“I can't do a cartwheel...yet.”

“I can't climb that obstacle...yet.”

“I can't do my back walkover by myself...yet.”

That tiny word leaves room for growth.

Instead of expecting perfection, we're teaching children to recognize progress. Maybe today's cartwheel wasn't perfect—but their legs were straighter. Maybe they didn't make it over the obstacle—but they climbed higher than last week. Maybe they still need a coach's spot—but they're using less help. That counts. Our October newsletter reminds families that developing perseverance helps children work through challenges, celebrate small improvements and learn that their effort makes a difference.

💙 What Parents Can Do at Home

You can help reinforce these lessons outside of Tumble Shine, too. When your child is struggling with something, try focusing less on whether they succeeded and more on what they did to get there.

Instead of only: “Great job!” Try: “I noticed you kept trying even when that was hard.” Or:

“You couldn't do that last week. Look how much you've improved!” Or one of our favorites:

“You can't do it YET.” We want children to discover that improvement doesn't require perfection. It requires willingness to keep working.
