From One Mom to Another—Here’s What’s Helping Us Thrive This Year

Let’s be honest—after school hours can get a little wild.Between 3:00 PM and dinner, my house often feels like a tornado of snacks, backpacks, and tired emotions. Everyone’s drained from the day, and structure? Yeah, that left the building around 2:45. 😅

But this year, I’ve found a few routines that have actually helped us thrive during that tricky after school window. These are real things I’ve done with my own daughter—and they’ve made all the difference.

✋ Here Are 5 Things That Help Keep Us On Track After School:

1. Movement Breaks Are Magic

Kids sit a lot during the school day, and their little bodies are begging to move by the time they get home.Even just 20 minutes of trampoline time, Ninja moves in the yard, or dancing in the living room resets her entire mood. Energy gets burned, and suddenly… she can focus again.

2. Snack + Chat Time

This is one of my favorites.I set a timer for 10–15 minutes, and we sit down together with a snack. No phones, no multitasking. We just talk.Sometimes it’s about her day. Sometimes it’s nonsense. But it always helps her decompress—and helps me connect.

3. Routine = Relief

Visual checklists are gold in our house. Our after school one includes things like: hang backpack, wash hands, snack, movement, reading, etc. It’s simple, but it gives her a sense of control—and cuts down on the “what do I do next?” meltdowns.

4. Reward the Effort

We started a “Star Jar” this year, and it’s been awesome.Every time she tries her best, shows kindness, or sticks to her routine, she earns a star. After 10 stars, she picks a little reward (ice cream trip, extra bedtime story, etc.).It keeps her focused on progress, not perfection.

5. TS Athletics After School Program 🙌

If I’m being real, the biggest game-changer has been enrolling her in the After School Program at TS Athletics.

She’s obsessed with the Ninja courses and tumbling time. I love that she’s moving, making friends, and learning in a safe, structured space that doesn’t involve a screen. And… they pick her up from school. That alone is a gift. 🎁

The program has built-in routine, fun activities, and encouraging coaches that make her feel proud and supported. It’s the kind of after school care that feels good as a parent.
