September is one of my favorite months in our preschool program at Tumble Shine—it’s the month we get to focus on cartwheels! For many little ones, this is their very first “big kid” skill. The joy on their faces when they flip those legs over for the first time is pure magic.
Why Cartwheels Matter for Preschoolers
Cartwheels aren’t just fun and adorable—they’re also an incredible way to build the foundation for many future skills. Cartwheels teach preschoolers:
Balance and Coordination: They learn how to move their bodies in new ways.
Strength: Supporting weight on their arms helps develop core and upper-body muscles.
Courage: It can feel a little scary to go upside down, and learning to do it safely builds bravery.
Body Awareness: Preschoolers start to understand left and right, direction, and how to control their movements.
As a mom, I know these early wins mean so much. A cartwheel might just look like a tumble across the floor, but it’s also a huge confidence booster. It tells your child, “I can do hard things!”
How We Break It Down Safely
At Tumble Shine, our coaches know that preschool skills need to be introduced step by step. Cartwheels require hip-over-head rotation, which can be tricky at this age. That’s why we use lots of drills and progressions:
Bear Walks: These build strength and comfort on hands.
Sideways Hand Placements: This helps start the cartwheel shape.
Kicking Over with Support: Coaches provide assistance until kids are ready to try on their own.
Every drill is designed to be safe, playful, and encouraging. We celebrate effort just as much as completion, so kids feel proud no matter what stage they’re in.
The Joy of a First Cartwheel
If you’ve ever watched a preschooler land their first cartwheel, you know it’s not just about the skill—it’s about the confidence that radiates afterward. Their eyes light up, they rush to show mom or dad, and they can’t wait to try again. That joy is why we do what we do at Tumble Shine.
Cartwheels may be the skill of the month, but the real lesson is so much bigger. When kids are given the tools, encouragement, and space to try, they discover they are capable of more than they imagined.
Encouraging Active Play
Active play is essential for preschoolers. It helps them develop physically and mentally. At Tumble Shine, we encourage children to explore different activities. From tumbling to trampoline, ninja skills, and cheer, there are so many ways to keep them engaged.
Benefits of Tumbling
Tumbling is a fantastic way for kids to improve their agility and coordination. It also enhances their strength and flexibility. As they learn new skills, they gain confidence. This confidence spills over into other areas of their lives, making them more willing to try new things.
Trampoline Fun
Trampolining is another exciting activity. It’s not only fun but also a great workout. Jumping helps improve cardiovascular health and builds strong leg muscles. Plus, the sheer joy of bouncing can lift their spirits!
Ninja Skills
Ninja classes are a hit with kids! They get to run, jump, and climb while developing their strength and agility. These classes also teach focus and discipline, which are valuable life skills.
Cheerleading
Cheerleading combines dance, gymnastics, and teamwork. It’s a wonderful way for kids to express themselves and build friendships. Plus, it instills a sense of community and belonging.
This September, let’s celebrate every attempt, every wobble, and every big smile—because from cartwheels to confidence, our preschoolers are shining brighter than ever! 🌟
