Halloween Energy Is REAL: 7 Fun Ways to Keep Kids Moving This Halloween

Halloween week is HERE! 🎃

The costumes are ready. The candy bowls are filling up. And if your house is anything like ours, the excitement level is somewhere between “slightly wound up” and “someone is definitely doing a cartwheel in the living room.” 😂

Halloween is one of those magical times when kids are naturally excited to move, play and use their imaginations. So instead of fighting all that Halloween energy... Let's USE it!

Movement doesn't have to look like a structured workout, especially for kids. Some of the best ways to get children active are simply to give them a challenge, turn on some music, make up a game and let them PLAY.

Here are seven easy Halloween activities you can try at home this week.

1. Have a Monster Freeze Dance Party

This one couldn't be easier.

Turn on some family-friendly music and let everyone dance like their favorite Halloween creature.

🧟 Stomp like a zombie.

🧙 Fly like a witch.

🦇 Flap like a bat.

👻 Float like a ghost.

🐈‍⬛ Creep like a cat.

When the music stops...FREEZE!

Anyone who moves has to do a silly challenge before jumping back into the game.

Ten jumping jacks?

Walk like a spider?

Make your best monster face?

Parents, you're playing too. 😉

2. Build a Spiderweb Obstacle Course

Grab some yarn or streamers and create a pretend spiderweb.

Kids can crawl under it, step over it or carefully move between the strands without touching the “web.” No yarn? Use pillows, couch cushions, stuffed animals and anything else you have around the house to create a Halloween obstacle course.

Have them:

⭐ Jump over the pumpkin

⭐ Crawl through the haunted tunnel

⭐ Balance across the spooky bridge

⭐ Tiptoe past the sleeping monster

⭐ Race back to the starting line

The more ridiculous the story, the better.

3. Take the Tumble Shine PUMPKIN Workout Challenge

We couldn't let Halloween arrive without bringing back our PUMPKIN Workout!

Here's your challenge:

P — 10 Push-Ups⬆️

U — 10 Up & Down Squats

M — March in Place for 30 Seconds

P — Hold a Plank Position for 10 Seconds

K — Kick Your Legs for 30 Seconds

I — Invent an Exercise

N — Run in Place for 90 Seconds

 And yes...

Grown-ups can do it too. 😂

4. Try a Witch's Broom Relay

No flying required!

Give your child a “broom”—even a pool noodle can work—and have them move a ball or pretend pumpkin through a simple course.

Around the chair...

Between two shoes...

Down the hallway...

And back!

Have siblings race each other, or let your child race against their own time.

Sometimes the simplest games become the ones kids want to play 47 times.

5. Go on a Pumpkin Walk

Halloween movement doesn't have to happen inside.

Head outside and see how many Halloween decorations your family can find.

Make it a scavenger hunt:

Can you find...

🎃 5 pumpkins?

👻 3 ghosts?

🕷️ A spider?

🧙 A witch?

💀 A skeleton?

🦇 A bat?

For older kids, make the walk longer or turn it into a friendly competition.

You're moving, spending time together and getting some of that Halloween excitement OUT before bedtime.

That's a win in our book. 😂

6. Make Trick-or-Treating Part of the Fun

Sometimes we get so focused on the candy part of trick-or-treating that we forget something pretty great is happening:

The kids are MOVING!

They're walking.

They're climbing steps.

They're carrying their bags.

They're spending time outside.

They're interacting with neighbors and friends.

So enjoy it!

Halloween doesn't need to turn into a battle over whether one piece of candy ruined an otherwise healthy day.

Let Halloween be Halloween.

Move. Laugh. Make memories.

And maybe remind them that Mom deserves at least one Reese's as a parenting tax. 😉

7. Celebrate What Their Bodies CAN Do

This one ties right back into everything we've been talking about at Tumble Shine this month.

October's Word of the Month is Perseverance.

We've spent the month reminding our athletes that mistakes aren't failures. They're part of learning and growing, and children can learn to work through challenges and recognize their small improvements along the way.

Movement doesn't always need to be about who's fastest, strongest or best.

Sometimes it's simply: “Look what my body can do!”

I can jump. I can run. I can balance. I can climb. I can dance. I can try something that feels difficult.

And when it doesn't work? I can try again.

That's something worth celebrating all year long.
